Award-winning artist and tutor Dave West was born in 1972 in South Wales. In 1995 he moved to Ireland and has lived and has worked in Balbriggan, North County Dublin ever since. Dave studied illustration at the Carmarthenshire College of Art and Design and in 2013 gained a degree in History of Art through the Open University.
His art covers a broad range from meticulous still life paintings, loose expressive pastel drawings to charcoal and Plein Air (outdoor) painting. He is a regular exhibitor in Ireland and Britain including: Royal West of England Academy, Royal Institute of Oil Painters, Royal Society of British Artists, Pastel Society (UK), Royal Society of Marine Artists, Royal Hibernian Academy, Royal Ulster Acadmy, Pastel Society of Ireland and Dublin Painting and Sketching Club.
His exhibition at The Séamus Ennis Arts Centre will feature small works of oil which have been painted during the past three years in the county of Fingal, "my adopted home". "As a ‘plein air’ painter I have a regular and dedicated practice of painting outdoors in most types of weather. There are so many variables and matters completely beyond the artists control that only a percentage of the paintings can ever be considered successful and finished. This exhibition features the paintings I consider successful from countless days painting Fingal’s Harbours, Coastline, Towns and Countryside.
This process of painting outdoors is one that engages all the senses not just the visual and it is this all-encompassing experience of being in the landscape that sets it apart from studio painting, one where the subtle nuances of lighting and optics and the changing weather constantly challenge the artist to capture a mood and create an ‘essence’ rather than a mere recording of the scene."
Since we can’t have an official launch at the moment, an online video of the exhibition's official opening by author and journalist David Diebold will include a ‘walk through’ the exhibition and discussion with Dave West.
A full online catalogue of this exhibition will be available to you and private viewings can also be arranged by contacting Colette on firstname.lastname@example.org
