A group of German construction workers sent to build a hydroelectric power plant set up camp on the outskirts of a remote Bulgarian village. Tensions within the group start to rise when former legionnaire Meinhard sets himself apart from his colleagues by making a connection with the villagers. But matters finally come to a head when the white horse that Meinhard has borrowed from townsman Adrian goes missing.
Using non-actors in all of the roles, award-winning director Grisebach subtly and intelligently explores themes of national pride and cultural difference in this memorable and unique contemporary western.
