This one day workshop is aimed at complete beginners as well as those who have already some experience in the art of mosaic.
Using the direct method of mosaic, participants will create a functional piece of abstract art (e.g. mirror) or you can make several small bases as practice, which will combine to be displayed as one piece of wall art.
Using traditional mosaic tiles and introducing other materials to provide texture and colour, you will create a unique piece of mosaic art to take home.
A large range of materials will be provided and will include mosaic tiles, slate, stone, unwanted or broken jewellery, stained glass amongst others. Depending on the materials chosen within the piece, the art work will be suitable for both indoor or outdoor use.
Throughout the workshop all things mosaic will be discussed: where to find inspiration, the work of different mosaic artists, where to source substrates (bases), preparation of bases and materials, best tools to use, options for displaying your work etc.
Demonstrations and sample boards will be used, in particular around preparing slate material to incorporate into your mosaic, i.e. splitting, cutting shapes, different ways of laying slate to provide interest. You will have an opportunity to practice your cutting skills under the instruction of an experienced mosaic artist.
