Special guest Brían Mac Gloinn features in the first of our 2021 online traditional singing sessions, hosted on Zoom and streamed live online.
Due to the Covid-19 pandemic and necessary social distancing measures, we invite traditional singers to join a Zoom conference call to share songs from the comfort of ones own home anywhere in the world. The sessions will take place in monthly instalments, usually on the 2nd Saturday of the month and will feature songs 'from the floor' and from an invited guest singer.
Brían Mac Gloinn is a musician & singer from Carlow, best known for his collaboration with his brother Diarmuid in their band Ye Vagabonds. Singing in English and Irish, Brían has a strong connection with the singing tradition of Ulster and his mother’s native Arranmore Island in Co. Donegal. Since the beginning of the pandemic, Brían has been focusing his attention on researching the singing tradition on Arranmore in more detail, through community enquiry and archival sources - the focus of a recent podcast and blog he made for the Irish Traditional Music Archive. He also co-founded and is on the core team of traditional singing & music festival Féile Róise Rua on the island. Apart from touring with Ye Vagabonds, Brían has also featured as a guest singer at singing festivals and sessions in Ireland and Scotland.
Our host is Macdara Yeates, a traditional singer, composer and producer from Dublin. Macdara has toured internationally both as a solo artist and with folk ensemble Skipper’s Alley, collaborated with award-winning theatre companies THEATREclub and Mouth on Fire, and produced work in association with Aiken Promotions, The St. Patrick's Festival, The Dublin Port Company and more. Macdara is a founding member of The Night Before Larry Got Stretched, a collective of traditional singers running regular events, with a particular emphasis on the dissemination of traditional song among young people.
